Astound-ment and General Thoughts...

In one of my earliest posts I had made a comment along the lines, that it is surprising that how although we have the same ingredients yet the mix always churns up something so different!

Albeit that that statement was made with reference to "girl meets boy....hate turns to love..etc etc"....

Today however I am repeating my earlier comment but with reference to somewhat different ingredients, or lets say not the original ingredients.

I am sure as some of the readers may have noticed there are some pieces that are featured on the IHF  or in the other categories that may appear similar in genre. It just leaves me astounded at the creativity of the writers  as to how despite what may appear to be similar backdrops they manage to create such different stories and characters, while at the same time making them memorable in their own way.

Last weekend half of the sub-continent celebrated Janamashtami and this weekend the other half celebrated Eid. Being a Dervish, I would like to dedicate this ode to eternal love and wish everyone Happiness and Peace...no matter which festival you are celebrating or celebrated. Or even if you are not celebrating any festival, than just listen and celebrate the simplicity of love and life.

OS Gallery - August Part 3

So a bit of nostalgia here too…well what can I say…I am truly feeling nostalgic! Enzoy!

Never Gone by winiwonka

Such a Kushi-istic OS. Says a lot without actually saying it.

Notable Mentions - August Part 3

The nostalgia will be reflected in all categories today, so for those of you who have already read these pieces, just bear the fact that each of these pieces do need to be in the IHF and these particular categories. And well there are a lot of new readers and they shouldn't miss these great pieces either.

So the first Notable Mention, is a nostalgic one as well.

Mohabbat Door Jaane Na De by –doe-eyes-

Another vintage IPPKND piece but thankfully, at least to the best of my knowledge, its not been discontinued.

Should definitely be read when you are missing those pure IPKKND moments post MU and were looking for a redemption track earlier than expected! What the heck, if nothing else, read it for the romantic storyline, it will not be regretted.

Raizada and Sons by Kalyaani
[Mature Content]

I am fast becoming a fan of Kalyaani. Her eloquence and style sets her apart and makes her worthy of being listed with the writers in the IHF. The only reason that Raizada & Sons is not in the HoF is for the fact that is as yet a budding piece.

Why did I mention her style? Well mainly for the fact that she has a story to tell and its not just about romance, there is more to it. And she tells it well. She has the skill to unfold the story but at the same time keep the interest of the readers intact.

The characters she has added and the emotional roller coaster of the main protagonists has made this piece well worth reading.

Why Stardust? Well, because this happens to be one of my favourites...and this is one of the best renditions. And because I was listening to it while writing the Notable Mentions so...so should you. :)

IPKKND Hall of Fame - August Part 3

[Fan Fiction which is set within the world of Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon, there may be slight change in the story line and timelines but for the most part the world of IPKKND remains intact and the writers have not taken liberties with the characters or the settings]

I was feeling nostalgic for the essential and integral IPKKND and the HOFamer in the 3rd installment for August I suppose is reflecting this sense of nostalgia.

Janet’s FF: IPKKND by Janet.Das
[Mature Content]

I have read a lot of stuff in my search to give you the perfect works of fiction...and in that search I have come across a lot of pieces that have been discontinued, and each time that I have read a piece that has been discontinued I have been saddened. But nothing has ever bothered me or saddened me as much as this particular piece.

If there is one piece of fan fiction that can be called the perfect piece for “World of IPKKND” than this is it. This is where the search ends. Not only does the search end here but also my words. And that as anyone who has been keeping abreast of this thread blog would know, is a difficult feat indeed, since I am extremely fond of my own words!

But honestly, Janet’s FF: IPKKND does not need words to either introduce it or to review it. It is just perfect in every way possible. Pure vintage IPKKND from the IPPKND annals.

It's a fantastically reelistic yet realistic portrayal of that particular phase of IPKKND.

To be read when you are missing the wonderful moments pre-MU!

It will be a loss for the readers and the viewers if this writer, who appears to be so attuned to the pulse of IPKKND, does not decide to either pick up this piece (perhaps with a leap :)) or write something new!

Now for several of you this ghazal may be Greek and Latin...specially for the youngies out there....but for all the heartburn that this play of ours has given us...here is a beautiful ghazal from the annals of ghazals...

OS Gallery - August Part 2

A simple sweet yet delicately written piece, which is all Mistyrains.

A different perspective on relationships and how perceptive and sensitive people are even though they may not be presumed as such.

Anything to do with Mami always reminds me of SJ’s version of Mami, so how can a list featuring a piece on Mami be complete without this one. Definitely should not be missed.

I like this piece because its different. Recognizing distance is half the job, bridging it a herculean task.

Notable Mentions - August Part 2

[Mature Content]

I have been putting this piece off for a while, in the hope that it would get updated, but it hasn't (as far as I can tell). Nonetheless, it is recommended. Primarily for the writing style but also for the weave of the story and the mystery yet undisclosed. It sure would be a shame if this piece doesn't reach its culmination.

Inverted by Mariam.Ejaz
[Mature Content]

One of the funniest and most entertaining pieces I have come across yet. I am sure there must be others but this one, just flows beautifully and is exceptionally well written, considering the storyline. This piece should be picked up one is feeling particularly dreary and down or disgusted with any particular episode of the show! It is guaranteed to cheer you up and leave you with a huge smile.

IPKKND Hall of Fame - August Part 2

THE WORLD OF ISS PYAR KO KYA NAAM DOON

[Fan Fiction which is set within the world of Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon, there may be slight change in the story line and timelines but for the most part the world of IPKKND remains intact and the writers have not taken liberties with the characters or the settings]

This is just a delightful piece and a totally different, yet entertaining take on that oh so important word which is the lifeblood of IPKKND “Misunderstanding”. As always, written in a snappy style which seems to by Nayika’s trademark. The dialogues are witty and so in keeping with the onscreen personality of the characters. The flavour of IPKKND has been perfectly retained, in fact it has not just been retained, I would say it has been enhanced by the additional character. No wonder this is the author’s personal favourite…it is my personal favourite too! The ingenuity of the author in writing this piece is commendable.
Note to Author: Sure would love to read a new piece, given the current turn of events onscreen!

SLIDING DOORS

[Fan Fiction which is based on the theme of Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon i.e. the main protagonists are present and may have similar characteristics, but the settings are / maybe different. Additional charters from the world of IPKKND may be present and additional and / or fictional characters may be added]

What does one write about Careless Whisper! It's a difficult task, indeed.

A piece that is poignant in its beauty of love intermingled with guilt and refreshingly its not “khushi-centric”. As anyone who has read this author before, would agree, she has a wonderful command over situations and characters. And this command has been reflected in this piece to perfection. The build-up to the cliff hanger in Part 18-B, beautifully crafted with Arnavs memories and has achieved the purpose of establishing an impression of “made for each other” kind of love in the readers mind, a necessity, given the storyline. Guilt maybe a driving factor for quite a few characters in this piece, but each is being handled with great sensitivity and care and with differing brushstrokes by the author who has painted an interesting picture of the brittle and fickle world of showbiz. But saved it from being a stark landscape by cleverly placed splashes of uncontrollable emotion, both from the characters as well as the readers. Its well thought out and planned and the control and placement of each situation, each event and each dialogue reflect in the smooth fluidity of its flow. Another feature that sets this piece apart, is the fact that although this is clearly a Sliding Doors piece, yet each character mirrors its onscreen personality and perhaps the reason for this lies in the fact that the characters are so well defined. The sensitivity with which this piece is written, will make it unforgettable for many a reader.

Although she has always given us stories and characters that we have enjoyed immensely but for me this will always be her coming of age piece.

Give It A Read - August (Part 1)

Glass by V323

An extremely promising piece by a young writer and should be followed, not only for its unusual storyline but also the interesting development of the characters. In fact there is quite a bit in this piece to recommend it, it shows a different very different relationship between NK and Arnav. Delves into the yet undiscovered psychosis of Shyam Manohar Jha. But a word to the wise, if you are looking for a lovey dovey Arnav Khushi love story with no complications, perhaps you should pick up something else to read, for this is the story of the dark road that one sometimes has to tread for survival of love and loved ones. On the whole, it is well written and thought out, with the intent to keep the readers glued to their screens, typing “update please”.

Unexpectedly Expected by Saucechips

An entertaining lighthearted piece, not exceptional, but entertaining nonetheless. Its value lies in the Khushi ASR exchanges which are quite enjoyable.

Rumour Has It by WordyWoman11

Another entertaining, yet not exceptional piece. The Khushi ASR exchanges are interesting but being a piece that would be placed in IPKKND world, yet Khushi has knowledge of Grapes of Wrath and Revenge of the Sith, was definitely disconcerting to say the least and for me, at least, detracted from its enjoyment.

OS Gallery - August (Part 1)

Between the Lines by Bingala

Kakori! Now why would Bingala think of Kakori…(I think of Kakori often….but then I am a glutton!!!) What a beautifully written OS! The normal the mundane impinging on the emotional yet not leaving a mark. OS have to be read to be enjoyed. Writing about them just kills them. Definitely recommended, Bingala at her best!

Homecoming by Napstermonster

Simple, sweet non complicated just a pleasure to read but an OS that's wasted if you miss the message at the end. Its like a soufflé! A perfect hot souffle! Understanding the takehome message of an OS is like having that perfect soufflé, a person with a discerning palette knows that a Souffle…is like no other dessert! Its pouffed up cloud manages to hold itself with pride and the nothingness has that amazingly divine taste out of sheer expertise and perfection! Same goes for an OS, only a discerning reader can fully fathom and enjoy the undertones of an OS and the “take home” message. Especially this one. Nonetheless, if you miss it, don't worry, you can enjoy the ride and the PDA of Arnav for Khushi. Wouldn't give this OS a miss.

Stains Part 1 and 3 by Arshiarnav1741

The surprise entry in the OS Gallery, the newcomer. But what a brilliant piece. Part 1 is sheer brilliance in concept. The interplay of coffee, stains and life as the two know it. I would give Part 2 a miss. I found the concept so great that I have been ignored all other aspects that could perhaps be worked upon.

I have just realized, my reviews of OS for some reason turning out to be rather food oriented, what with the introduction to the OS Gallery starting out with Sushi and this one having such a detailed discussion on Souffle. Its not a conscious decision, it just kind of happens! But hey what what the heck, you can just chalk it off to Ramadan or me just being a foodie!

Notable Mentions - August (Part 1)

So we have lots of Notable Mentions this week for you, in the first installment for the month August.

Time After Time by Ashna27

A subtly written piece of the evolution of ASR into Arnav. Perhaps not the hero-ish ASR material but a mellow more humane and somewhat grounded Arnav. The writer has woven an interesting and captivating tale of converting "repentence" into "redemption" and at the same time illustrating the beauty of human relationships. Each relationship has been elaborately and beautifully showcased and its importance in the scheme of things has been subtly established. Whether it be the children and Chachu or Jethi Ji and Payal or Bhai and Akash. They all flowed beautifully and with ease. The author's soft touch makes this piece a pleasure to read and has added a different flavour and flair to an oft-repeated story that could have so easily fallen flat, but didn't. And the gala celebration of “Power of Women” was indeed a brilliant touch and the coup d’etat. A distinguishing factor, which also makes this piece stand out is the “re-establishment” / “reinvention” / “re-discovery” of Arnav and Anjali’s relationship, which was very nicely handled. So on the whole another great piece to read and definitely recommended.

Tainted by Arisai
[Mature Content]

There are some writers from whom one expects only good things and over time the bar just keeps rising. Unfortunately for Arisai, my expectations of her have arisen tremendously and now in every genre tackled by Arisai I expect nothing less than sheer brilliance. To give credit where its due, I have not been disappointed to date! Tainted is a piece falling in the Sliding Doors category. The parallel lives of Khushi Kumari Gupta and Arnav Singh Raizada…if it weren’t so diabolically wicked as an idea it would be actually laughable how far Arisai has thrown them from their safe cocooned perfect purer than purer worlds. But however you may wish to view it, but you wont have a choice but to admire the concept and to enjoy the piece. Although very much in a development stage, but promising greatness as it unfurls its dreamy tentacles. I personally feel that its premature to discuss this piece any further. But one word to the wise, do make sure that you don't miss the literary references, it adds depth and a certain perspective / element to this piece. I wouldn't miss this for anything.

Note to the Author:  I hope that you are planning to develop this piece slowly and at leisure and for this to be a long piece of fiction rather than a short story for anything else, firstly would not practically possible with this storyline and secondly would be unfair with these kind of characters, this story and your writing.

Strings, Tying us Together by AquaBluez17
[Mature Content]

Now this is a new one. A new concept and definitely a different kind of a story. Not what you’d expect in the beginning, but a good surprise for a jaded reader, someone who’s tired of more of the same thing. Not that this isn’t more of the same thing. It is! But its just repackaged! And repackaged, differently! Same Same, but different! Confused! Good! That means you will read it. You should. Nice storyline, well written, retains the flavour of the play and the real characters commendably. So on a whole a fully recommended piece. Kudos to the writer for coming up with this concept.

IPKKND Hall of Fame - August (Part 1)

THE WORLD OF ISS PYAR KO KYA NAAM DOON

[Fan Fiction which is set within the world of Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon, there may be slight change in the story line and timelines but for the most part the world of IPKKND remains intact and the writers have not taken liberties with the characters or the settings]

And here we have the first installment of the IHF for the month of August, with usual suspects and someone new.

But this time “we” bring to you a hidden gem….something that has not been mentioned by any of our readers that have been so kind to post their personal favourites.

The credit for pointing out this piece goes to Anamika100…I shall be eternally in your debt Anamika not only for the wonderful discussions and debates on our favourite pieces but also for introducing me to this Hall of Famer.

Solid Soul by Akhilash
[Mature Content]

Anyone who has read this piece will know exactly why this is a Hall of Famer and for those of you who haven’t read it I suppose a little introduction to this piece is in order. This is a piece that squarely fits into the World of the IPKKND category, in the post Khushi-ASR wedding period, but that's where all similarities end and the brilliance of the writer takes over. The first thing that will strike you, or at least that struck me was the manner in which the writer has played with different locales and its effect on the evolution of our heroine. It is quite unusual. Its not a static piece, in terms of location i.e., whether the domestic or the international locations. Not only is this unusual but also adds a different feel and flavour to the piece and the writer has ensured that it has been well maintained throughout by adding local flavour to each destination that she touches upon. I am sure some of you must be thinking, that I either have nothing to write or else have lost all sense propriety of what adds value to a piece. However, I stand by what I am saying. This finer detail has greatly enhanced the feeling of this piece and has made it personal to the characters and each and every little action perpetrated by them within their world. In fact this piece, is a mastery of finer detail, which come together beautifully to produce a complete package.  Not something to be read in a rush but to be enjoyed at leisure. The depth of the characters shows the time and care with which the writer has crafted each one of them, and the manner in which the story has evolved over time also bears witness to the storyteller’s craft that seems to be this writer’s forte. She has beautifully taken us to the depths of despair and then we see the Pheonix rise again! And how! Not only her characters are well defined but interact beautifully with each other and the story. Another distinguishing factor and perhaps something that will vindicate some of the viewers / readers are who have been highly irritated with our very own Mr. Akash S. Raizada are his not so “Akash-like” actions in this piece!! A definite recommendation….with the hope that it gets updated soon.

The credit for the second HoFamer also goes to Anamika100, although I am beating myself for having missed it…since (sorry Gargee, but I am sure this wont come as a surprise) I stalk Gargee’s homeworld…read Index and Fan Fiction pages!!

A Little Bit Stronger by Gargee

This is such a delightful piece. A little less intense but superbly written, as is Gargee’s wont! There are some pieces that you will come across that maintain and translate the feel and flavour of the actual play in such a superb manner that the next stage of the story seems like a natural step. And “A Little Bit Stronger” happens to be one of those pieces. You can actually “see” Arnav gritting his teeth in irritation and than being baffled by the unexpected absence. The firecracker surprise, was just that a surprise! And what a surprise, and definitely not something one would have expected to be the consequential cause of the expose at the micro and macro level, both. But either ways, it is such a fun read. The only regret is that its sequel is still a “work in progress”. Nonetheless, this is about “A Little Bit Stronger”, which is very highly recommended and should be read at the first chance that one gets.

Feature Review - Across the Universe by Munchy

This special piece by our resident Muffinmonster, was originally listed in "Notable Mentions" but it would have been an injustice not only to the piece itself but also to the author to have left it languishing in Notable Mentions and therefore it was moved to the main category…..the Hall of Fame.

As I have said in the intro blurb…Across the Universe is not your typical ASR and Khushi piece…but surprisingly enough the excellence of this piece is not found in something so obvious as the interchangeable similarities that confound our lovably hateable or is it hatebaly loveable hero and don't really exist except in his sorrow-filled Machiavellian mind…it is so much more, as you will discover once you read it, if you haven't already i.e.

It is an undeniable fact that Munchy is the reigning queen of portraits in grey…anyone who has read Before the Last Sunset or Pandora's Box…would know exactly what I am talking about. But in Across the Universe I feel she has taken human frailties to a whole different level, in terms of the written word. She has made her fictional characters human. They are living breathing walking talking creatures, for it is not when they make you laugh that they are imbued with life…nor it is when your tears mingle with theirs that life's blood springs forth into their veins…but it is when they walk that thin line that each human treads between right and wrong that humanity in all its misshapen forms is born and either lives to tell the tale of its ill gotten gains or faces the demons of choices made during lonely nights longing for comforting arms no longer there and that my dears…are the tales woven in Across the Universe.

Demons are chasing both our heroes…and both are looking for a peaceful end to their demon filled days in the arms of our lovely princess. It is quite interesting to note how beautifully the author has tackled the past of both the protagonists. While the past of one is being wiped clean by the princess and we see / hear less reminiscing about it as she becomes an integral part of his existence. Yet her very existence and involvement in his life, is bringing out the demon of the past for the other protagonist. The author has to be complimented on this emotional triad, and the manner in which its complexity has been handled. This is would be one of those points which I would include in the excellence of Across the Universe.

Now coming to human frailties and resultant flaws…if I may be so bold as to use that word, without being berated for it. After all it's a healthy word to use and then who isn't flawed…we say…bedagh to sirif khuda ki zaat hai…meaning perfection is the domain of gods…and none of the characters in this piece can claim godliness.

So in our colour conscious sub-continental world who cannot believe and perhaps some can relate to the jealousy of a darker skinned woman towards a fairer skinned one and her daughter…the unfair acts a manifestation of lifelong insults and taunts, once at the receiving end now meting out as good as she got. The thin line is crossed and the character is created and we are enjoying the outcome of the author's ministrations in giving it life and the wonderful interactions between the mother and daughter both past and present that have shaped the heroine into who she is.

Human frailties again their raise their ugly head when we are faced with a dilemma. Heads or Tails?  Would a man of intense emotions pull the Ajay Devgan to Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam's Salman Khan, in a bid for his love's happily ever after. Well, perhaps yes, in an alternate reality and alternate universe, with a lesser play of hormones, and a shade less emotional baggage and possessiveness in the melee and perhaps for beings with less intense emotions running amok. In real life, intense emotions are generally of the "got your hands dirty in the mud" variety, and not just any mud, but the kind that has the tendency to stick under your nails and no matter how many times you wash it just doesn't come out. The kind we generally see portrayed in Munchy's writing. That kind of emotion, that kind of intensity burns everything in its path, and by the time you call out for the fire engine its too late…and our dear Mr. Raizada has just woken up and is sort of in the process of placing that call to the Fire Department…..and we are all enjoying the resulting updates of his oh so human antics.

Humanity and our author is not going not leave anyone untouched it seems and so the green eyed boy has also come into its wake. For some reason I am extremely fond of him. I really like the way the author has crafted his character. He is a normal red blooded male. At no point in time have his reactions been unnatural or unusual or out of the ordinary. He has reacted exactly as any normal man in a relationship would. He is jealous exactly when he should be. He is accommodating beyond the call of duty, specially given his past and the fact that he is baited by our beloved ASR at every given opportunity. In fact I'd say he has been rather understanding. The chaotic culmination of the emotional built up was inevitable, he finally caved and gave in to his demons and that I suppose was what breathed life into his character. His entire persona has beautifully developed and it is indeed kudos to the author, that despite having a much loved hero, she was able to create a character in Murtaza, in such a beautiful manner that he has garnered a liking among the readers and has carved a niche for himself.

Now our lovely damsel (not) in distress. I seriously think the lesser said about her the better. For the simple reason, that one has to read the piece to actually understand and enjoy how her character has evolved and how subtly yet obviously different she is from the person she is often mistaken for. I simply love the way her character has been created and developed. Her interactions with each and every character is priceless, to say the least and most enjoyable being the ones with her brother and Maxine, quite obviously.

It is rather difficult not to have a favourite character when you read any piece, and it is interesting how often when I am reading a piece that I am particularly enjoying, that I end up liking characters that are on the periphery. This in my view is the mastery of the writer that they animate even the characters that do not hold centre stage. As with my last review, where Freddy was the show stopper, in this piece it is no other than Ronak. Phenomenal personality, amazing wit and the ability to withstand the blackmailing of the wicked witch of the East! What more could a sister ask for!!!

Across the Universe is like an exquisitely woven piece of silk, of "Dhoop Chaoon" to be exact, if any of you know what that is. Its the kind of  silk that reflects different shades depending on the light reflected. The weft and weave or the "tana" "bana" as we say, is being woven with care, each event, each anecdote, each character is playing out its role to perfection. One wrong thread and it would jar the whole effect but as of yet the harmony has not been broken.

Now a little bit about the writing style. The minute you say "Grey" nothing but dullness, drabness and lack of colour comes to mind. But where Muffinmonster dallies with the grey in human characters and relationships her pieces are the very antithesis of Grey. They are filled with colour. Each update is virtually bursting with joie de vivre, and without even venturing to her other pieces and sticking only to instances of Across the Universe, you can feel the life buzzing through the…err…webpages…in each activity the characters undertake, whether it is in the dancing in Shantivan, or the Harry Potter quiz, or the paintings, or the imagined world of the lovely heroine, or the college scenes, or the lingerie shopping, or the kabootar discussions, or the flashes of Sridevi dances in the rain, or Murtaza's baby sitting scene (which by the way was beautifully executed)…no matter what she writes, its full of life. Her pieces are not dark and dreary but bursting with colour. Therein lies the paradox. How does she achieve it? This grey of character and relationships in writings full of life and colour. It would be so unfair to talk about her writing style and to leave her other two works that are featured on this thread, but in all honesty this is about Across the Universe, so we will save it for another day, another weekend. And just end this on the note that it does indeed take a writer of skill to balance in their writing the drabness of human life and the colours that make life bearable.

Before I wrap up the review for this week, I have to commend the Muffinmonster on one more thing, the small memorable anecdotes. That entire episode of the little girl mimicking Mr. Raizada on the phone with the eternally suffering Aman, is one of the most priceless exchanges that I have read. I honestly feel that will be one very tough act to follow. Will be interesting to see if it ever gets out done.

So anyone out there who is not acquainted with Across the Universe…which I find difficult to believe…please do not waste a single second and do start the memorable ride Across the Universe.

Feature Review - Highway To Hell by Madmaxine

Before I start…I just have to say one thing…most people thank IPKKND for introducing them to the world of…ASR and Khushi…and their wonderful romance…well…I have something more to be thankful for….it introduced me to writers and works of fiction that I would have never ever read…had I not one random evening decided to find out as to what is the big deal about this play called "Khushi"! In all fairness, how could one be expected to know that a daily soap on satellite television could play muse to such talent…well I now know better!

I purposely saved this review for the weekend..as there is much to say.

Well for starters…this piece has my two favourite "L"s…Louboutins and Leela….! Admittedly not my beloved Leela Palace in Delhi…but a "Leela" nonetheless…a mention of Leela is good enough reason to make me smile…and well Louboutins…come on now…which woman in her right mind does not turn into a Cheshire cat at the thought of red soles!!

And then also while reading it I couldn't help but say…"Thank You God! Finally…someone has decided to add the missing piece"…you see, there was this one thing that always and always, sort of, bothered me…ASR is supposed to be this tycoon…right…so why does he not live the life of a tycoon…why does it not show in the non existent splendor of his life…(the only expression of wealth in that house is in Mami's lust for jewelry)…ASR the poor rich boy uses a Cross pen, to sign the papers in that scene where Khushi pulled the property papers' switch…that just got me so disturbed for some reason…it is so random a thought and I suppose irrelevant in the bigger scheme of things…but then thankfully we have this piece that plays out like the life of the Rich and Famous...and I breathed a sigh of relief…a heartfelt thank you to the writer for providing the missing element…[I am sure no one has ever thanked Mad Maxine for something so random…but at least for me it was important to put things into perspective and as far as that scene goes…well hey…if not a Visconti or an Onoto at least they could have used a Montblanc for ASR to sign the papers..I know its petty…but its called keeping things in sync]. But this comment is not meant to detract from the piece…I am trying to get all the nonsensical stuff out of the way so that I can concentrate on the "deep" "meaningful" stuff coz I am sure that's all that you guys must be interested in :)

So lets get cracking…shall we…

This is by far one of the best pieces that I have read on the IF Forum. Should by any chance there be somebody out there who has not read it…than they should leave whatever they are doing and make a beeline for it right now….why you would ask….well the reasons are innumerable…but to mention just a few…

It is a perfectly crafted story and while reading it you actually feel that there is a master story teller at work here…for the manner in which it intricately weaves in and out and involves the life of each character that appears on the pages...no single character is left hanging about…they are all involved and have a role to play...whether it be the incorrigible Freddy or the oh so different from screen Anju…or Mrs. Murthy...each and every single character just gels beautifully. But more than anything else…its the dynamics of each relationship that just leaves you hanging on to each word and wanting more…it's the dynamics and how it plays out…whether it be Athos Porthos and Aramis and their amusing antics…or the protagonists themselves…and the children…or the Guptas and Khushi…or Khushi Freddy and Adit...or the surprising one of all ASR and the tango namesake.

I fell in love with Freddy…the oh-so-human-but-not-gonna-show-it Prima Donna was my favourite character..i just love Freddy. The amazing thing is that despite being an ASR / Khushi piece, each and every other characters is equally well sculpted so that they have personalities that stand out and are not a mere backdrop for an "ARHI" romance….how else could I make a statement such as "I fell in love with Freddy"!

I simply loved ASR's silent thoughts at every ASR / Payal run-in….they were so ingeniously entertaining….and you couldn't help but feel for the long suffering ASR! The author's wit deserves a standing ovation.

Every Khushi that appears on the pages of fan fictions is different…and sure there are some out there that have outgrown the "ji" complex and "serve with a smile" attitude (no pun intended!!)…but surely nobody has landed ASR on his back with a vicious taekwondo technique or left him motionless with a kiss (why else would it be just 2 on a scale of 1 to 10!!! Duh-uh!) But this Khushi was something else…what I loved most about her were the walls of detachment! Invisible yet tangible…and then the gradual undoing of Minnie! It shows the control of the writer that from absolute detachment in the beginning she has introduced us to a softer sweeter and somewhat more toned down Khushi.

It would be highly unfair if the Tango and its namesake were to go un-complimented…..! Its these little things…the tango…the Neruda's poem…that makes this piece brilliant. Not just the tango..but the introduction of its namesake as well. I for one really enjoyed that turn in the story. There have to be different elements cleverly put together to make a story interesting.

Now about the writing style…there are enough pieces out there that have interesting concepts, good story lines, characters aplenty…yet fall flatter than a blowdry on a humid evening in Lucknow…simply because the narration is lacking in the spirit of story telling…I always think of Haroun and the Sea of Stories when I read good concepts and bad writing. Storytelling is an art…or perhaps it's a science…its importance perhaps can be gleaned from the fact that there are bazars in certain cities in the sub-continent called "Qissa Khwani"…(literally not story teller…but someone who narrates)…the spirit of tales is lost in todays world…but in the days of yore "dastangoi" was actually an art…dastaans were narrated and not read…and now we find it difficult to even read the heavy tomed Tilism-e-Hoshruba leave alone engage in the verbal art of narration (minus ofcourse the revivalists in Delhi)...all thanks to our microwave lives I suppose…which is why when you come across people who can tell a good story..it sure need to be appreciated…oh hell…I am off on a tangent again…bad habbit…sorry…so anyways.

Highway to Hell is great because the writer writes it so well. Right amount of humour, correct element of pathos, just a slight tweak of curiosity (lets not forget the dream sequence, shall we), a dash of….well…arrogance…(that's not bad) and all held together with words that find their mark….with a penchant to use…err…interesting words…for e.g…"perspicacious"….(by the way darling….what do you think is the percentage of your readers who would be using that word?!?!?)

So to put it in a nutshell…Highway to Hell…is a great story…if I may take the liberty of saying so…of being to hell and back…and living to tell about it…and should be on the list of "must reads".

Special Note: Loved the haircut touch!

OS Gallery - July

In my humble opinion...One Shots are akin to Sushi...they are not only an acquired taste...but require extremely skilled handling...for while longer pieces may hide many a fault...One Shots will bare it all !!!

So here are the pieces of perfection for July.  Enjoy.

World of our Own by Nayika
I don't think i need to say anything about this OS...! This little gem needs to be enjoyed.

Marriage Night by Krani
If you want a revival of the ASR Khushi banter...pre misunderstanding..this would be an interesting page to turn to.

Solitude by Lyraa99
Solitude...not always serenity or deliverance.

O Ri Chiraiyya by Gargee
A very different and unusual angle...definitely worth a read.

Maa Ke Daal by Minimuffin86
Entertaining..interesting...reeking with the flavor of IPKKND and yet stamped with Muffin Monster's touch.

Till the End by Molten Lava
Some truths are undeniable. Superbly written.

ASR - Shaadi Kar Ke Phas Gaye Yaar!!! by Serialjunkie
(Musings on Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon)

Free by BlueMystique
An interesting addition to the OS Gallery...i would give Part 3 a miss..it spoils the whole thing in my view...its always better to stop while you are ahead in the game. Well written and captures the emotions well.

Notable Mentions - July

And now we bring one more category to the Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon Hall of Fame (IHF)...Notable Mentions.

These are those particular pieces which if left unmentioned in IHF would be either sheer lunacy or mere criminal intent.

The World of Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon

The Games We Play by  Bingala
[Mature Content]

In my review I have called this a “slow starter” and I have been asked to clarify (not by the author, but by someone who is as avid a reader as I am) as to why I would qualify this as a slow starter. It's a reasonable enough question, and while I am not changing my original review, I feel it's fair to provide a clarificatory note.

The first 15 to 17 chapters I would say are the build up to the start of the games, so they are softer, mellower and are understandably less “action packed” (if I may used the words in relation to a romantic piece) vis-à-vis any actual high voltage incidents, but are more of an acclimatization of two people who are getting familiar with each other and their relationship and their feelings for each other, both emotional and physical. However, the use of the words “slow starter” do not in any manner suggest that the pace should have been any faster, it would have destroyed the entire piece! It is just a simple statement of fact that this particular story has a slow gradual build up, but the words slow starter should not be interpreted to mean that it is boring or lacking in interesting exchanges and anecdotes. I hope that clarifies the situation.

A slow starter...but picks up as it goes along and then lands with a boom and packs a lethal punch as well...so you are left wondering whether it was the same piece that you started out with. Obviously well written otherwise it would not be listed here...but what makes it stand out are two things...first and foremost is the manner in which it has been built up...i found the pace astounding...and that is definitely saying something for the piece...i started it and then decided to give it up..coz i found it a bit on the slow side...but then on another day, i decided i have to give it another shot coz the writing definitely had something about it and may be i was being way too impatient, what with all the super intense stuff i had been reading of late...so i gave it another shot...and i was not disappointed in fact quite the opposite..i was blown away!!!! I simply loved the way the story has developed...its gradual build up from a sort of romance to a grudging recognition of love (for more than one character) to a thrill a minute sort of adventure and well...the cliff hanger...not a single event or moment is out of place...then the second point is this snappy trick the author has of quoting couplets, lines from songs, and well other authors...but this is a tricky venture...for just as much as enhancing the piece and the mood..it could very well spoil it if the correct songs, lines or ashaars are not chosen...one has to compliment the author for choosing just the correct piece for the correct moment.

So definitely recommended...please do read...if you haven't already

Sliding Doors

The Reason I Breathe by Lyra 99

There is a line from Faiz Sahib's famous poem that i was reminded of when i read this piece..."aur bhi gham hain zamane mein mohabbat ke siwa...rahattein aur bhi hain aik wasl ki rahat ke siwa"...but really...are there?

Unrequited love..unattainable love..which of the two can a soul survive...Both these emotions have been so eloquently portrayed by the writer and then pieced together to meld into one. This is indeed a heart wrenching piece. The play of emotions and the dynamics of the ASR and Khushi relationship is reminiscent of IPKKND. The additions are extremely well handled and not intrusive and have been woven into the story with extreme care.

Definitely a piece worth reading.

Fate Mate by Karmachameleon

Having out grown Cinderella stories with my pigtails i was not hopeful when i started out on the voyage that is Fate Mate...and to top it up high school romance was certainly not to my taste even when I could be excused for indulging in school girl fantasies..but it is the writer's accomplishment that Fate Mate is actually neither a fairy tale nor a college romance...its so much more. Its beautifully crafted..painstakingly "evented"...the characters are well developed...and is breezing along merrily. The young ASR and Khushi have retained their personalities impeccably and..perhaps on a parallel universe their TV personas could have been an extension of their Fate Mate bond...subject of course to both of them having suffered amnesia. So if you read one...shall i say...ASR and KKG junior version...give Fate Mate a shot.

Intoxicated by Arisai
[Mature Content]

This piece embodies the concept of "Sliding Doors"...an interesting read...just because its so different and unlike anything else i have read so far.  Not an easy plot / background and dangerous liaisons but very well handled...it could have so easily turned into a sleaze fest at the hand of a less careful writer...(judgmental reader Alert!!...dont bother reading if you are looking for picture perfect ASR and Khushi).

In Games We Play, Arnav is listening to Sitting on the Dock of the Bay by Ottis, one of my personal favorites. I just couldnt resist it....so enjoy!
